How to Estimate Salary After Tax by State

Most paychecks differ by state because state rules sit on top of federal tax and payroll tax. This framework helps you estimate take-home pay quickly and consistently.

Step 1: Start with gross pay

Use annual gross income first. Then include pre-tax deductions such as 401(k) contributions if they apply to your scenario.

Step 2: Estimate federal income tax

Federal tax depends on filing status, taxable income, and tax-year brackets. Use your expected deductions to get a realistic estimate.

Step 3: Add payroll taxes (FICA)

  • Social Security tax applies up to the annual wage base.
  • Medicare tax applies to all wages, with additional thresholds.

Step 4: Add state and local income tax

This is where states diverge most: no-income-tax states, flat-tax states, and progressive-tax states can produce very different net pay. Some cities also apply local income tax.

Step 5: Convert annual net pay to paycheck frequency

Convert annual take-home to monthly, biweekly, or weekly to match how you budget. For job comparisons, use the same frequency and assumptions for each scenario.
